Lorazepam is primarily marketed under the brand names of Ativan or Temesta. It is a high powered 3-hydroxy benzodiazepine drug for short to medium term. It possesses the all five intrinsic benzodiazepine effects including anxiolytic, amnesic, sedative/hypnotic, anticonvulsant and muscle relaxant. Under a short-term medical care on anxiety, insomnia, acute seizures such as status epilepticus and sedation of the patients admitted at the hospitals. It is used for sedation of aggressive patients.

Uses of Lorazepam

As Lorazepam is considered as a short-term acting medication having the similarities with the other benzodiazepines, it exerts the therapeutic and adverse effects through its dealings in benzodiazepines located on the GABA receptor in the nervous system. Launched in 1977, Lorazepam was used to treat anxiety. In benzodiazepines, Lorazepam has higher addictive potential. Lorazepam is abused as well as it is used for fan and recreation using continuously against the medical advices. Lorazepam possesses sedative-hypnotic and anterograde amnesia properties of Lorazepam and because of these properties it is used for criminal purpose as well.

Lorazepam Dosage - Lorazepam 2mg

When the patients take the suggested dose, Lorazepam disheartens the central nervous system. Lorazepam can be used orally, and it can be injected into a muscle or administered via a vein. It is better to take the smallest dose so far possible as it can relive the symptoms. The doses are to be adjusted according to the reaction of the patients. In between 0.5 mg to 1mg of Lorazepam can be provided in every six to eight hours for controlling the treatment-based nausea and vomiting. It is given just before chemotherapy to decrease the risk of side effect; similarly, 2 mg of Lorazepam can be given just half an hour before the treatment. The additional 2 mg may be introduced in every four hours if it deems necessary.

Managing anxiety, 1mg to 3 mg at two to three times daily is advisable as a typical dose. For sleeping requirement, it can be 2 mg to 4 mg at the bedtime. The older or debilitated adults can have 0.5mg to 2 mg daily in a split dose.
